Is it a sin to not pray in congregation

Prayer is the key to heaven; One of the important prayers. Prayer is the means of attaining closeness to Allah. Paradise cannot be expected without offering prayers. Allah Ta’ala has spoken about the suffering of those who are indifferent to prayer in the Holy Qur’an.

Question: Will it be a sin if you deliberately do not pray in congregation?

Answer: For an adult male to pray in congregation is muaqadah in the Sunnah and is very close to wajib. A person will be guilty if he leaves the Jamaat without reason.

The Prophet (PBUH) never used to make Jamaat Taraq. Even when he was ill and could not walk, he still appeared in the prayer congregation with his feet on the shoulders of two Companions. He did not pray alone without congregation.

Even the Prophet (peace be upon him) said this much – ‘I want to ask the muezzin to give the adhan and ask someone to lead the prayer and I will take the embers of the fire, and burn the house of the one who did not come out to attend the mosque after hearing the adhan.’ Bukhari, Muslim).

He also said, “If there are three people somewhere, and they do not pray in congregation, then Satan will win over them.” So you consider praying in congregation as a duty.’ (Nasa’i)

He also said, “The curse of Allah is on that person who does not attend the congregation even after hearing the adhan.” (Majmaujwaid).

Rasul Allah (S.A) forbids leaving the prayer even while in battle. Allah Rabbul Alamin has also told how to pray while fighting. Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:

(O Prophet,) when you are present among them and lead them in prayer, then (the rule when dealing with the enemy is) that a group of Muslims should stand with you and keep their weapons ready. Then when they prostrate, they will go behind you and the other party, who have not prayed yet, will come forward and they will pray with you. They will also keep their self-defense equipment and weapons with them.’ (Surah Nisa verse 102)

Even in difficult situations like war, Allah has urged us to pray with the congregation. The Holy Prophet He warned about neglecting to pray in congregation and said,
“A person who does not attend the congregation after hearing the adhan, despite having no disability, will not pray.” (Ibn Majah 793)

It is obligatory to pray in congregation. Leaving Jamaat without any reason is a big crime. Allah has commanded, and establish prayer and pay zakat and bow down with those who bow down. (Surah: Baqarah, verse: 43)

It is more important to pray in congregation than to pray alone. Rasulullah SAW. He said that praying in congregation is 27 times more rewarding than praying alone. (Bukhari Hadith 645, Muslim Hadith 640)

Rasulullah SAW. Said, ‘If people knew the dignity of calling the call to prayer and standing in the first row, they would have played the lottery to get it. If they had known the dignity of noon prayer, they would have competed for it. Had they known the dignity (for them) between the Isha and Fajr prayers, they would have come to the prayers even if they were crawling.’ (Muslim Hadith 867)

14 If disqualification is revealed, a person will not be guilty even if he does not join the Jamaat.

1. Illness, 2. Amputation of hands and feet, 3. Blindness, 4. Paralyzed, 5. Excessive weakness, 6. More rain, 7. Muddy roads, 8. Extreme cold, 9. Being terribly dark, 10. Risk of loss of assets, 11. Fear of defamation, 12. fear of death 13. Time to leave for the tour. 14. It is permissible not to participate in congregational prayer if there is a fear of train, flight or car departure.
